Can you imagine what World Cup visitors to New Zealand will be saying next month? Its all getting a bit sticky.

Super inflated accomodation prices, imported NZ souvenirs.........$200+ for an All Blacks shirt, off shore its half price, the justifications are getting laughable.

Politicians, Finance and Big business have failed to kick start the economy.

Will the markets tumble in the European countries on Monday? US credit ratings has dropped,

Congress couldn`t hold hands and stand together to save themselves. Either way the West has a major problem and right now it seems like China is getting fed up with with the Politicking of Democratic Countries. What a turn around of the cold war years.

Which leaves the baby boomer generation as the next best hope.Its a group big enough to have propelled every major development and trend since the sixties.

What it wants, it gets and right now they are 50 plus and hold the solution.

I`m all for people making money, but when the NZ rich list increases their value by 20% last year it sticks in the craw.
Time for some new rules.

Priority for nz made
Free publicity/media for NZ made
Award government/ngo contracts to NZ companies
Avoid needless imports
Promote NZ designers/ artists stories
Values and Cooperation not based on greed, politics or money

Third year into a recession and the bottom of the market is dropping like a lead balloon which only leaves

the top end, value, quality and authenticity, exactly the values that the baby boomer generation embrace.

So anyone up for the dregs? Not me

Tapa Pod Exterior Lights

One of the most distinctive ceramic wall lights is the Tapa Pod light, some times refered to as a waka wall light. It has been used for several hotel projects including the Queenstown Hilton, Auckland Westin and many residential projects as well as an outdoor lighting in a Sydney garden courtyard by Urban Exotic. This years range includes many pieces from Family objects and stories, including Resin Icon paintings, resin sculptures and pierced ceramic lights. The Albert`s Anvil ceramic sculpture will also be exhibited, there is a family connection Albert`s grandson Gordon Andreassend is a former Grammar Student from the late 1940`s. Albert was born in Stamsund, Lofoten Islands in the Arctic region of Norway and came to NZ around 1891. Researching the family history has developed into many art pieces including drawings, resin sculptures and ceramics as well as extensive websites detailing the pioneering roots of Ronalds family in NZ and the origins back to 1598 in Norway. Where many relatives have been found. After 110 years it is amazing to be writing to each other and reconnecting family bonds

The Dome Jars are the latest pieces commissioned for another Chinese Hotel, still under construction In all there were three shapes, ivory crackle and burnt yellow glazes and polished resin lids, they won`t be internally lit as shown here but it was too good an opportunity not to light them up for the photo.

Artworks Art Exhibition is being revived after a break of three year last held in August 2008 and previously called The Hilton Artworks.The sales of the Chan Andreassend ceramics and artworks were stunning, where the Keystone featuring Classical male and female figures on each side, sold for $2700 in an auction. Then followed 3 years of recession, financial failures and disasters in NZ.

Hosted by Rotary, this event is making a welcomed returned and hopefully a signal to the rejuvenation of the New Zealand economy. It is coinciding with the huge influx of visitors expected here for the World Rugby Cup in September. The second piece based on the same form was produced for another Art Show coinciding with the series Lights of Matariki also selling on opening night.

Perfume Drawings

The start of a new series of drawings, based on the luxurious perfume bottle. 600 x 450mm pastel, crayon and ink on paper. Started in the last week of June 2011. I first used this technique in the mid 1980`s, interest has been recently rekindled in this medium, the intensity of working gives a great respite to everyday pressures and gives a great contrast to the exacting nature of producing ceramic and resin objects which often go through 8 stages before being finished. The drawings and paintings on the other hand give an immediate result.
My all time favourite has to be Viktor Rolf Flower Bomb and the bottles from Juicy Culture remind me of the Vintage fragrance bottles with a twist. Seductive and fun.

Theatrical Rings

Could a Ring be large enough to become a stage? From this notion Chan Andreassend set out to make the largest ring possible. Chan Andreassend rings are larger than life, unusual, quirky and highly imaginative. Many of the rings incorporate basic elements from ancient cultures-grass, feather, shells, fur, weaving and bristles. Embedded into polished resin, a jewel-like quality is created in these often humble objects The rings are displayed on a resin stand which serves as a functional storage device and creates a miniature sculpture.

The Handtool sculptures are inspired by a collection of Ronald`s great grandfathers work tools. It celebratres the trades as well explores family histories and connections. A recent commision for Hair Dressing scissors added to the collection. All pieces are approx 300mm long. Colours and details can also be customised. They are already capturing the imagination of buyers at several recent Charity art shows including Baradene and Kohia with near sellout of all the pieces. The success of these was inspired a large sculptural version of Tin snips 900mm long 6kg in polished resin. Hannah`s Teapot

Treasured household items from times gone past. Where taking tea was more than a just a drink but an occasion to be enjoyed. This new series celebrates family history and stories beginning with thepierced ceramic and resin teapot and the ceramic anvil which can be seen reflected in the window.The teapot belonged to Ronald`s great grandmother Hannah, the piece connecting with others as they reflect on memories of their own grandparents. This new collection developed from Ronald`s part time project to discover the stories and origins of his family roots from Scotland, London, Norway, China, Melbourne and South Canterbury.

Ritz Carlton Shanghai

The Ceramic Dome Jars were commissioned earlier this year for the Presidential and Vice Presidential Suites in the Ritz Carlton Shanghai. New patterns and detailing were created to reflect the Art Deco Interiors. The pierced and cut ceramic surface is finished with a bone crackle glaze and a polished resin dome lid.

The Dome Jars concept was originally created for a 4 piece artwork called

Mandarins, Sheiks and Faraway Places"These four pieces are about legends and fables that I read when young. Polynesian Islands, Arabian Nights, Castles and the most intriguing of all were the ones from the Orient. The spices, perfumes, splendid silks, spells and urns that always seemed to contain hidden secrets or a magic spirit. The form is inspired by Chinese perfume bottles with the lids becoming more elaborate reflecting headdresses and costumes from the stories" ...Ronald.

Michelle Deery owner of Hotel Debrett selected many of our objects while furnishing the exclusive Boutigue Hotel in Auckland including resin vases dishes and plates, this lead to creating a new range of resin objects which are sold at Debretts as momentoes and gifts. They have a style and colour reflective of the distinctive carpet that Michelle designed. The resin range include business card holders, bookends, plates and dishes.

One of the enjoyable part of being in the creative industries is sharing ideas and techniques with others. The reward being the chance to discuss new ideas and develop skills from a different perspective. There have been many students and interns, some who have gone on to develop their own ranges in the creative industries including Anita Glucina with her extensive ranges, Claudia Jaffe with ceramic lights, ceramicist Zekiah Heath and Kirsten Sach now a landscape designer in Auckland. One particular highlight was the MBT Light for the Missabittatitti Dragon boat team in Brisbane with Sue Garwood as well as the project Lights of Matariki with seven New Zealand poets.

New Zealand Chinese Trade Association Awards 2011

The Inlaid resin discs were commissoned for the New Zealand Chinese Trade Association Awards, presented by New Zealand Prime Minister John Key and awarded for excellence in Business and Trade in China. A variety of materials were used from gold & silver leaf, dried loutus leaf, veneer, ink all encased in a polished curved resin disc, the largest 450mm high 5.5kgs. Intended to be seen from both sides as well as backlit.

MBT Pierced Ceramic Light

This pierced ceramic light was developed in conjunction with Sue Garwood a school acquaintance and part of Missabittatitti, a Dragon Boat Paddling Team in Brisbane- all breast cancer survivors. It is a symbol of team spirit, support and friendship with a common bond as well as part of art therapy, the idea was to also allow team members to make one of their own incorporating their own ideas, thoughts and thereby share in the pleasure that craft and art can bring.
The shape combines the shape of a dragon boat drum, curve top a wave with a rope binding the team together. The first ceramic light was gifted to Sue`s mother. More examples can be seen in the range Objects of Light www.chanandreassend.com.au

Cross Jewellery Exhibition

Who can resist the temptation of sweets?

The taste, colour and endless varieties! The anticipation of the
sixpence (5cent) mixture, yum.

Now it just doesn`t seem the same as when I was growing up
in Timaru and news that some varieties will cease production
highlights what has already been lost.
So drawing on my crystal clear memories, a big bag of sweets
and wearing a crisp white apron. I started to experiment.......
the endless recipes , tastings, anguish of failure to the
exhilaration of success!!!
Finally sweets can take there place along with other icons of
NZ and can be worn with pride.
Do you really need the names? left to right
Chocolate fish, Jelly bean, Fruit slice, Milk bottle, Jet plane,
Banana, Jaffas and False Teeth.
Of course in their traditional flavours available on ribbon or chain
and in recognition of the sixpence mixture also in pairs and threes.
